A short policy for a quiet app.

Paper is designed so there's nothing to leak. Everything you write stays on your device. We never see it. There is no server holding your memories.

i.What this is

This is the privacy policy for Paper, a quiet journaling app. We wrote it in plain language because it's short, and because lawyer language would feel out of place here.

Paper is operated as a personal project. Throughout this document, "we" refers to the creator of Paper, and "you" refers to the person using it.

ii.What we collect

Nothing.

Paper does not collect your name, email, phone number, location, IP address, device identifiers, browsing history, or any other personal information. There is no signup form that asks for those things, and there is no hidden tracking that captures them silently.

Specifically, Paper does not use:

• Google Analytics, Firebase, Mixpanel, or any other analytics service
• Facebook Pixel, advertising IDs, or any tracking pixels
• Crash reporting services that send data off your device
• Cookies for tracking purposes
• Third-party SDKs that share data with anyone

iii.Where your writing lives

When you write something in Paper — a memory you save, a feeling you release, a letter to your future self — that text is stored only in your browser's local storage on your own device. It never leaves your device. We have no way to see it, read it, or copy it. If you delete the app, the data is gone.

This is also why Paper does not require an email address or any account: there is no server-side account to create. Your "recovery code" is just a memorable label for the data already on your device.

iv.What this means in practice

Because nothing leaves your device:

• You can use Paper offline, and it will work normally.
• If you use Paper on two different devices, the data does not sync between them. Each device has its own jar.
• If you lose your device or clear your browser data, your memories are gone. We cannot recover them, because we never had them.
• If anyone ever hacked Paper's website, they would find no user data because there is none stored.

v.Optional features that touch your device

Some features use your device's hardware. They run on your device only:

• Microphone — only if you choose to record a voice memory or voice release. Audio is processed locally; releases are deleted immediately, voice memories are stored on your device alongside text memories. Your browser will ask for permission the first time.
• Vibration — for subtle haptic feedback when you tap things. Can be turned off in settings.
• Audio playback — for ambient music, when you toggle it on.
• Notifications — Paper does not currently send push notifications. If we add them in a future version, you'll be asked for permission first, and you'll be able to disable them.

vi.Sharing memories

If you choose to share a memory using Paper's "Share" feature, the memory is encoded into a shareable link. That link contains the memory's text and your chosen pseudonym, encoded so it can be displayed when someone opens it. The link is generated only when you tap Share, and it is sent only to whoever you share it with through your phone's normal sharing tools (Messages, Mail, etc.).

We don't see, log, or store these shared links.

vii.Hosting

The Paper website is hosted on Netlify. Like most web hosts, Netlify keeps standard server logs of incoming requests (IP addresses, browser type, time of request) for security and performance reasons. These logs are managed by Netlify under their privacy policy, which you can read at netlify.com/privacy. We do not access these logs except to investigate technical issues, and they do not contain anything you've written in Paper.

viii.Children

Paper is not designed for or directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from anyone of any age, but we mention this specifically because privacy law requires it.

ix.Changes to this policy

If we ever change what Paper does in a way that affects privacy — for example, if we eventually add optional cloud sync — we will update this policy and clearly mark the date of the change at the top. We will not retroactively change how we handle data you've already written.
